On September 19, 1559, a devastating hurricane wiped out the settlement of Santa María de Ochuse in Pensacola Bay, Florida. The fleet of 10 ships led by Tristán de Luna y Arellano of Spain was also anchored in Pensacola Bay. The powerful storm raged through the bay, forcing 6 ships to be grounded and later sunk. The violent winds carried a 7th ship inland and was laid to rest in a grove of trees. Three of those ships have been discovered by the University of West Florida Archaeology department.
Many of the crew and those living in the settlement were killed, and most of the food and supplies were lost.
