Hugo Vihlen grew up in the small, backwoods town of Homestead, Florida. The grandson of Swedish immigrants, and the youngest of seven children, Hugo learned determination and ingenuity at a young age. After serving as a combat pilot in the United States Marines during the Korean War, he worked as a commercial airline pilot for Delta Airlines. In 1968, inspired by adventure and wanderlust, Hugo Vihlen sailed from Morocco to Florida in his 6 feet long vessel, April Fool, setting the record for crossing the Atlantic Ocean in the smallest vessel. In 1993, he again broke the record aboard his 5 feet 4 inch boat Father’s Day, built by George Carroll. I had the pleasure of meeting Hugo for an interview, and to hear his stories.
