Summary
The Georges Philippar was a beautiful and luxurious passenger liner built by Ateliers et Chantiers for the French Messagiers Maritimes company. Launched in 1930, the ship experienced a fire while still being fitted out. In 1932 on her maiden voyage, a cabin fire quickly spread throughout the ship, killing at least 41 people, possibly between 50 and 100, and causing the ship to be abandoned. It sank on 19 May, 1932 off the coast of Yemen. Two other Ateliers et Chantiers ships, the Pieter Corneliszoon Hooft, and the L’Atlantique, were destroyed by fire within 8 months of the loss of the Georges Philippar. Conspiracy theories were numerous as world powers were once again jockeying for position during rising political tension.
