The steamship Pulaski, a grand vessel of its time, met a tragic fate on the night of June 14, 1838. Departing from Charleston, South Carolina, bound for Baltimore, Maryland, with over 192 passengers and crew onboard, the Pulaski was heralded as a marvel of engineering and luxury. However, tragedy struck when one of its boilers exploded 40 miles off the coast of North Carolina, causing catastrophic damage. The explosion tore through the ship, resulting in a devastating loss of life and property. Survivors endured harrowing conditions, clinging to debris in the dark waters, awaiting rescue. An estimated 128 people lost their lives in the disaster.
