The Costa Concordia was an Italian luxury cruise ship operated by Costa Crociere that ran aground off the coast of Isola del Giglio, Italy, on January 13, 2012, after striking an underwater rocky outcropping. The accident occurred because the ship’s captain, Francesco Schettino, deviated from the planned route to perform a “sail-past salute” close to the island. The collision tore a 53-meter gash in the hull, causing catastrophic flooding and capsizing. The chaotic evacuation of over 4,200 passengers and crew resulted in the tragic deaths of 32 people. Schettino’s mistress, Domnica Cemortan was on the bridge at the time of the accident. Schettino faced heavy criticism for his actions, including abandoning the ship during the disaster, and was later convicted of manslaughter and sentenced to 16 years in prison.
The wreck of the Costa Concordia became an environmental and logistical challenge, sitting in a protected marine area. The complex salvage operation of the shipwreck, one of the largest in history, involved upright recovery called parbuckling, and towing the ship to Genoa for dismantling, which was completed in 2014.
