On June 10, 1772, the Royal Navy vessel HMS Gaspee was boarded, captured, and burned by a group of men from Rhode Island. HMS Gaspee, commanded by Lt. William Duddingston, had been harassing, stopping, and searching ships coming in and out of Rhode Island ports. Governor Joseph Wanton was enraged, as Duddingston had not notified him of his orders to enforce the Navigation Acts. Frustration mounted, resulting in the destruction of a Royal Navy vessel, and the wounding of a Royal Navy officer.
Despite an official inquiry into the matter, none of the Rhode Islanders were charged with any crimes, in what became known as The Gaspee Affair.
